Firstly, the conceptual opposition between the home and the city, as well as its gender implications, the former commonly associated with feminine values and the second with ideas of masculinity. Secondly, this research explores further the idea of the house and the home as feminine values, the women's realm, the women's place and even the women's confinement; in a nutshell the home as the women's place, opposed to the city as the men's one. Thirdly, the women's access to housing, and the paradox that while there is a generalised association of home with the female, women's face different forms of direct and indirect discrimination for accessing a housing tenure. This research departs from the assumption that women's access, use and enjoyment of the city is strongly affected by gender systematic disadvantages, stereotypes and social constructions around gender. Within this context, women's access to housing is essential for their economic, social and politic participation in the city. Furthermore, the objective of this study is to understand the implications of the gender inequality in the city design.
